Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has completed a move to Scottish Championship side Dunfermline Athletic Football Club, signing a short-term deal until the end of the season.
The 33-year-old midfielder reunites with his former Celtic boss Neil Lennon, who was appointed as Dunfermline’s manager last week. Lennon has taken over at East End Park as he aims to steer the club away from relegation. The “Pars” currently sit second-bottom in the Scottish Championship, six points clear of automatic relegation and just two points behind Hamilton Accies as they battle to avoid the relegation play-offs.
Wanyama, who made 64 appearances for the Harambee Stars and captained the team in major tournaments including the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, before retiring from international football in 2021, brings a wealth of experience to Dunfermline. His previous stint under Lennon at Celtic saw him win back-to-back league titles and shine on the European stage, including a memorable goal in a Champions League victory over Barcelona.
His impressive performances in Scotland earned him a move to Southampton in 2013 for a then Scottish record fee of around £12.5 million. He later played for Tottenham Hotspur for four years before joining Major League Soccer side CF Montréal in 2020.
Wanyama left the Canadian club in January and, after passing a medical on Wednesday, is set to return to Scottish football for the first time since 2012. Subject to international clearance, he could make his debut on Saturday against Ayr United, a team managed by his former Celtic teammate and captain, Scott Brown.
Dunfermline fans will be eager to see if Wanyama’s experience and leadership can help the club climb the table and secure their Championship status for next season.
