Dandora, Nairobi – April 5, 2025
Mathare United continued their resurgence in the FKF Premier League with a thrilling 3-2 win over Posta Rangers in a high-octane encounter played at the Dandora Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The visitors started brightly, taking an early lead in the 8th minute through Felix Oluoch Mboya, who converted a spectacular long-range cross from the left flank. From a tight angle, Mboya floated the ball over Mathare United goalkeeper Michael Wanyika to silence the home crowd.
However, the Slum Boys responded swiftly. Ten minutes later, they were awarded a penalty after Brian Ouru was brought down inside the box. Derrick Anami stepped up and sent his powerful strike to the right – the same direction as Rangers’ goalkeeper Samuel Njau – but the sheer force saw the ball nestle into the net to level matters at 1-1.
The two teams went into the break deadlocked, but John Kamau’s tactical adjustments early in the second half proved decisive. Mathare introduced goalkeeper Robert Mboya for Wanyika at halftime, and by the 56th minute, had brought on attackers Musa Masika and Paul Kinyanjui for Elli Asieche and Brian Ochieng.
The changes bore fruit almost instantly. In the 61st minute, Masika – a mid-season signing from Gor Mahia – dazzled with a solo effort, weaving through three defenders before rifling a shot into the top right corner, leaving Njau rooted to the spot.
Five minutes later, fellow substitute Kinyanjui made it 3-1 after latching onto a perfectly floated pass. He shrugged off his marker with ease and lobbed the ball delicately over the onrushing Njau, sending the home fans into raptures.
Posta Rangers attempted a late fightback and capitalized on a defensive blunder in the 71st minute. Felix Oluoch pounced on a loose ball after a poor first touch in midfield and set up Shami Mwinyi Kibwana, who lifted a stunning long-range effort over Mboya. The ball struck the underside of the crossbar and bounced in, but despite the moment of brilliance, it proved only a consolation.
The result marked Mathare United’s second successive win following their 2-1 victory over Mara Sugar last Friday. The Slum Boys now climb to 10th on the table with 33 points from 26 matches (8 wins, 9 draws, 9 losses).
For Sammy “Pamzo” Omollo’s Posta Rangers, it was a third consecutive defeat, leaving them teetering just above the relegation zone. They now sit 15th with 25 points – only one point clear of the danger zone – having won 6, drawn 7, and lost 13.
With momentum on their side, Mathare United will be hoping to build on this winning streak as the season heads into its final stretch, while Posta Rangers face urgent questions as they fight to avoid slipping back into relegation danger.
