Dandora, Nairobi – April 5, 2025
Kakamega Homeboyz came from a goal down to edge AFC Leopards 2-1 in a thrilling FKF Premier League clash played at Dandora Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
AFC Leopards went into the match aiming to end a frustrating run of four consecutive draws, including a barren stalemate in the Mashemeji Derby. Their last league victory came back on February 15 against Mara Sugar, and the pressure was mounting.
Leopards made an early statement with a beautifully executed team goal in the 8th minute. Starting from goalkeeper Levis Opiyo, the side pieced together five crisp passes before striker Victor Omune clinically finished the move, handing Ingwe the early advantage.
Kakamega Homeboyz, who themselves had been held to consecutive draws against KCB and FC Talanta, responded just before the break. In the 45th minute, winger John Omondi delivered a pinpoint cross that found an unmarked Moses Shumah, who powered home a header for the equalizer. It was Shumah’s 14th goal of the season, leaving him just one behind the league’s top scorer, Ryan Ogam of Tusker FC.
After a 1-1 first half, Homeboyz made tactical changes early in the second half, introducing Francis Omondi and Oliver Majak in the 57th minute. Later in the 75th minute, the influential Shumah was substituted for Henry Omollo.
The game’s decisive moment arrived in the 84th minute. A long ball into AFC Leopards’ box caused confusion among the defenders, and an attempted clearance ricocheted off Kenya U20 midfielder Kelly Madada. The ball fortuitously fell into the path of substitute Henry Omollo, who slotted it home from close range to complete the comeback for the visitors.
Despite a late push from Ingwe, Homeboyz held on to secure all three points and leapfrog Leopards into fifth place on the league table. The win takes Kakamega Homeboyz to 38 points from 26 matches (9 wins, 11 draws, 6 losses), while AFC Leopards drop to sixth with 37 points from 25 games (9 wins, 10 draws, 6 losses).
It was a hard-fought and dramatic victory for Homeboyz, who will now look to build momentum as the season enters its final stretch, while Leopards are left searching for answers after five matches without a win.
