Duke Abuya featured in the starting XI as Young Africans SC (Yanga) secured a commanding 3-0 victory over Tabora United in a Tanzanian Premier League match played yesterday at Ally Hassan Mwinyi Stadium in Tabora, Tanzania.
Deployed in the defensive midfield role, Abuya filled in for Ugandan international Khalid Aucho, who was omitted from the squad due to fatigue following his national team duties. His presence in midfield contributed to Yanga’s solid performance as they avenged their first-round 3-1 defeat to Tabora United at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in November last year.
Sweet Revenge for Yanga
Tabora United, eager to replicate their earlier triumph, started the match brightly, managing to hold off Yanga’s attacking threats in the opening minutes. However, their resilience was broken in the 21st minute when Israel Patrick Mwenda fired home a spectacular direct free kick to hand the visitors the lead.
The first half ended with Yanga maintaining their slender advantage, but the visitors turned up the intensity after the break. Clement Mzize doubled the lead in the 63rd minute with a well-taken finish, setting the tone for Yanga’s dominance. Just seven minutes later, Prince Dube sealed the victory with a goal in the 70th minute, ensuring Yanga walked away with maximum points.
Yanga Extend League Lead
With this victory, Yanga continue to strengthen their grip at the top of the table, now sitting on 61 points—four points ahead of their closest challengers, Simba SC, who remain in second place with 57 points but with a game in hand.
Meanwhile, Tabora United, despite their spirited start, were unable to repeat their previous success against Yanga and remain stuck in 5th place.
This result solidifies Yanga’s title ambitions as they edge closer to defending their league crown, with Abuya proving to be a crucial piece in their midfield setup.
