Kenyan international winger Janet Moraa Bundi is making waves in the Egyptian Women’s Premier League after surging to third place on the top scorers chart with an impressive 25 goals. Bundi, who plays professionally for the National Bank of Egypt Women’s Football Club (NBE FC Women), is now just two goals behind the league’s current leader, Nigerian star Alice Ogebe of FC Masar.
Bundi’s latest heroics came in NBE’s 4-3 away loss to Zed FC, where she netted a stunning hat-trick to catapult herself into third spot. It’s a remarkable achievement for Bundi, particularly considering her position as a winger — a role typically dominated by providers rather than goal scorers.
Leading the scorers’ table is Alice Ogebe, while second place is occupied by Burundian striker Sandrine Niyonkuru. Niyonkuru, who was the 2023/24 Egyptian Women’s Premier League Best Goal Scorer with a record-breaking 66 goals, previously followed a path similar to Bundi’s — leaving her home country for opportunities abroad. Niyonkuru first moved from Burundi to Tanzania’s Fountain Gate Princess before heading to Egypt, and she now features for Changchun Dazhong Zhiye in the Chinese Super League.
Likewise, Janet Bundi’s journey has been one of steady progression. She honed her skills at Eldoret Falcons and Vihiga Queens — Kenya’s record champions — before moving to Tanzania’s Yanga Princess. In September last year, she made the leap to Egypt, joining NBE FC Women.
Currently, National Bank of Egypt sit fifth in the league standings with 41 points, behind leaders FC Masar (67 points), as well as Al Ahly, Wadi Degla, and Zamalek.
With only a few matches left in the season, Bundi’s phenomenal form could not only see her close the gap at the top of the scoring charts but also inspire her team to a strong finish. Her success is another testament to the growing impact of Kenyan players abroad.
